Of all my characters Sumio is still my favorite, but I've realized something: my writing with him is stagnating. My threads have been way too same-y as of late, just kinda following the formula of: Sumio meeting a person on a job, said person helping him out of pity, and many mean-spirited jokes at the poor guy's expense. I want to change that. Sumio has been feeling cripplingly depressed for pretty much the entire 8-or-so months he's been in Pandora; the guy is at his limit. It's time for him to do soul-searching, perhaps eventually find a purpose in life other than to be jobbed around by other people. If anyone wants to throw their characters at Sumio to try and help him, please feel free. But I should probably warn that any thread I start from this will probably involve lots of depression and existential dread, just putting that out there so everyone knows what you're getting yourself into.
@toothflick I could throw Burke or Ivan at him in the near future!
Ivan is still pretty new to Pandora and could use some friends. He's not the type to boss somebody around at all and he also gets kind of depressed at times due to his struggles with narcolepsy. He'd likely approach somebody who looked like they were feeling down. Does Sumio have hobbies? Ivan is kind of geeky and he likes to read, listen to music and play video games. He's from the 80s so newer technology amazes him. He'd probably find Sumio's briefcase fascinating. Maybe Sumio could act as an older brother figure for him or at the very least be a friend. Ivan works at a comic book store in Pandopolis.
Burke could use some friends too, as most of his relationships are antagonistic. He's a little pushier but still mostly a pushover and has definitely had a fair amount of mean spirited comments thrown at him. The main thing I should note, though, is that he's really sketchy. He doesn't outright murder people but he does tend to use people and do crooked things for his own personal gain. However, lately he's been less selfish and could use some positive role models to influence him to stay that way.
Burke does also feel melancholy from time to time, especially since he lost Oswin who I know Sumio met at least once. He wouldn't outright approach Sumio if he looked depressed but if Sumio mentioned Oswin or was randomly hanging out by her old apartment that would definitely be a conversation starter. Maybe Burke would initially suspect he was an old fling of hers and be bothered by it. Burke works at the Gem-Port in the Cosmic Wilderness but often visits other places.
Let me know what you think of at least one of these two potentially meeting Sumio for non-job oriented stuff! I'm not taking on new threads right at the moment but we can do one as soon as I'm open!
For Ivan, Sumio doesn't really have any hobbies outside of reading poetry and browsing expensive stuff that he can't afford. But Sumio would want to be around someone who looks up to him and would actually come to him for advice and stuff.
For Burke, I could definitely see Sumio going to her apartment and just reminiscing about that time he put out a fire there, since it was his one moment of actual triumph in Pandora, so I think that idea has a lot of good potential.
If Sumio isn't afraid of encountering one very sassy, loudmouthed robot who sometimes can't tell his elbows from his arse, Scaramouche would love to lend an auditory processor! And I do mean that; he'd love to just listen as Sumio talked/griped/cried about anything and everything, even if it crosses into an overflowing cup of depresso! Handling his son's constant yearning for the moribund has given the android a good tolerance for it, as well as equipped him with the necessary conversational tools to be of more interactive assistance. (Instead of just, you know, honking like a mechanical jackass).
Which reminds me, his son!
If Scaramouche is too much of a shock to the system, then I suggest checking out @Rik-Rik-Ree 's character, One-One! He's a sweet n' sour little gremlin, but helping people through tough times is what One-One's all about! The wee babe doesn't have a mean circuit in his entire shell. Unless, of course, your name is Carter J. Burke. :p
Following what Rik-Rik-Rass said, my character One-One might be able to help Sumio! He's a small robot comprised of two halves that make for a single whole. Glad-One is a very cheery and sweet little robot, if rather naïve. Upon seeing anyone in crisis or in a bad way, he is compelled to help as best he can! He's simple, but he's kindhearted. If nothing else, perhaps he may be able to provide sunshine to brighten Sumio's day!
Sad-One, on the other hand, 'depression and existential dread' is practically his bread and butter! Like his other half, Sad-One is also compelled to help those who are in hurting or need assistance, but his way of helping is very different from his twin. Sad-One is a morose character, and prone to philosophical ponderings too. He would most likely engage in a 'brood session' with Sumio, but sometimes that is just what one needs in order to work through problems! He's cynical and a bit of a downer, but he has kernels of wisdom in his scrambled processor.
Oh, Christ. I feel like I'm stalking Nyami, Rass and Ree by posting in this thread. :P
I've been overlooking two of my characters lately (Max Reed and William Hudson), who have precious few threads. I wondered if I could throw one of them at Sumio?
Here are a couple of ideas:
Reed is an investigator at Jessica Jones's Alias Investigations in Pandopolis. Perhaps he could work with Sumio on a criminal case? Reed is somewhat grumpy and pessimistic, so he would be patient with Sumio.
Hudson, on the other hand, is obnoxious, insensitive and would bully and troll Sumio endlessly. I could have Hudson lose his pet hamster, Rat Fuck, and come to Sumio's agency to ask him to find it. If Sumio did, Hudson could be crazy grateful and try to drag him out to bars with him to pick up chicks.
@Rik-Rik-Rass I could see that being fun. Does a robot like him drink? since I could see a fun interaction being him listening to drunk-Sumio's depressed ramblings.
@Rik-Rik-Ree Sumio having a philosophical conversation with Sad-One sounds great! Seems like a good thing to kick off this entire character-arc with.
@Dharke So I think I'd like to do the Hudson thread, but with the slight difference that Sumio would be running into him shortly after Hudson lost Rat Fuck, since I like the idea of Sumio offering to help someone without being strong-armed into it like he normally does.
@toothflick Aw yeah, deep philosophical discussion time! I'd be honored to help kick off this character arc for Sumio! And as an added bonus, it can make for a good transition to a thread with Scaramouche too! Perhaps after their philosophical conversation, One-One can offer to bring him back home(aka a camper that also serves as a food truck restaurant) for a bite to eat, which could turn into some drinks with his pops!
@toothflick I can do you one better: not only can Scaramouche stuff his metal gob to the nines like an aluminum Thanksgiving turkey, he can also pretend to be absolutely pants-on-head wasted! Ahh, commiseration through copious amounts of drinking... Should prove enlightening! And don't worry, Scaramouche and the boyo will take excellent care of Sumio if he passes out in their home, pinkie promise.
I also really like that idea, Ree! It'd be a lovely way to tie everything together, nice and tidy with a sparkling bow. Not to mention organic! What do you think, toothflick?
I know we didn't discuss a place or location, but I'd like to add that Scaramouche and One-One are pretty much bums in a camper; wherever Sumio is most likely to be, that's where our loveable doofuses shall be too!
...Except space. I mean, we probably could shoot ye olde airstream up the elevator like a potato in a potato cannon, but I'm not footing the bill, ha ha!
Hey broskis. Sorry I've been borderline AWOL for the better part of a year. Things have been a little meh and I feel like I'm stretched so damn thin right now. I wanna come back and write with you guys again, but idk when that's gonna be. Hope you're all doing well. <3
