September 15th

It had been a long day at work. Ryotaro had already called home to warn Yu and Nanako that he was going to be home late that night. He tried to not do that type of thing as often as he used to, but sometimes it just couldn't be helped. Work piled up, especially when people had a habit of vanishing and leaving a bunch of work that still needed to be done. He usually found it easier to get things done when there wasn't as much noise going on, so staying up late allowed him to get more done than he would've otherwise.

Putting his coat on as he left the station, Ryotaro wanted nothing more than to crash on his bed. However, his peaceful walk back home was interrupted when he started having the feeling there was someone trailing him. Not only that, his surroundings suddenly got covered in a thick fog, much like the one from back in Inaba that had left a lot of people worried. It sure felt like a bad omen and that, combined with the feeling of being followed definitely put Ryotaro on edge.

Pulling out his gun, he kept himself alert in case anything tried to jump at him. He kept glancing at his surroundings, trying to spot anything through the fog. He walked through the empty streets slowly, not wanting to give any reason for whatever was tailing him to chase after him.

At some point, Ryotaro thought he had seen something and immediately fired a warning shot towards it, but when he looked again, it didn't look like there was anything there. That feeling of being watched remained and now he knew that whatever was tracking him wasn't going to be scared away by just a gunshot.

If there was one good thing that had come out of recent events, it was the fact that Toby had her damn car back. She had missed her bug. The rental, rentals, had been perfectly fine. Good cars even but there was nothing like this bug. Toby knew how her car moved. Knew how it turned, how to put the seat back in order to get comfortable, and there wasn't any fussing with the cd player or her cd collection. Most new cars all had those updated bluetooth systems and Toby could never figure that out easily.

But she had been in her car when midnight hit. Just a couple of blocks away from the office when something changed. There was a sudden difference in the air. Toby could smell the change, like a curtain had fallen. Her heart rate instantly kicked up and her right hand snapped out to turn the music off even as her foot eased up on the gas. Her survival instincts had always been good in these situations and Toby had started to learn to listen to those instincts.

Which meant she clearly heard the gunshot just a minute later. Toby didn't know who it was or what was going on but she understood someone was in trouble. She took another couple of turns and rolled down her window, noting how odd everything seemed around her. The atmosphere had completely changed. Thankfully she could see clearly in the dark as bright as daylight and she spotted a man with a gun moments later. Just someone she hadn't thought to find out here so late at night.

"Dojima?" She rolled up next to where he was on the sidewalk and glanced around. "Everything okay?" She had put the car in park but she also started to get out of the car, just in case. Standing with the driver's door halfway open, the bug in park, looking around to see if she could see any trouble. Dojima wouldn't have taken a shot if something bad wasn't going down.

It turned out that the sound of his gun firing did make something happen. The fog was thick enough that he had trouble seeing anything but the lights at first, but once it got closer, Ryotaro identified the vehicle and, more importantly, the person driving it: Daye. It was good to see a familiar face during this tense situation, but still, he couldn't let his guard down just yet.

"Daye." Ryotaro glanced at his surroundings, hands still holding his gun in case anything weird popped up. "I've been having this weird feeling that something is following me around, and I can't see a damn thing through this fog," he explained himself, his body tense. "I thought I saw something in the fog, but either there was nothing there, or it backed off after a warning shot."

He wasn't being paranoid, he was pretty sure of it. Being a detective for as long as he had meant that Ryotaro had developed pretty good instincts and it wasn't just some fog and late hours that would get him like this. There was something out there, and it was stalking him.

"Did you see anything weird on the way here?"
He asked, though he kept his expectations low.

Dojima was quick to break down the situation for her. They had worked together enough that apparently it was easy to slip back into business mode between them. The brunette nodded in response because that was the sort of same feeling that she was having right then and there. They were both being affected by the same thing. "It feels like some sort of magic but I can smell anything off of it." It wasn't exactly right, there was more going on than what met the eye. She just had no experience in what the fuck it was.

"I heard your shot right after it hit. Fog's not really letting up." Her eyes kept narrowed and she bit down on her bottom lip in thought even as her eyes went back over the street. "Might be best for us to get you back to the precinct. More likely to get information there, right?" Toby was pretty sure that Dojima would have been on his way home at this time at night.

Her left hand lifted as she tried to look at the time. It wasn't digital but it had stalled. "I just..." It wasn't that it was still. It was the fact that it wasn't moving past midnight. "Definitely some sort of spell or ability." If there was a person behind this, Toby wasn't sure she wanted to meet them without some more backup. She knew that she could call in a few people as well to be back up. Harry came to mind, along with the half-demon related team, and Hellboy himself. All good people for something a little spookier than normal.

"I can call some of my people who might know more." Toby had easily slipped back into business mode the second she had stood. She tapped the top of her car, indicating that he should get in when she froze. The feeling of eyes on her had suddenly increased. Enough that the hair was standing up on the back of her neck. Slowly she did another scan, deciding that the sooner she got Dojima back to Midcourt P.D., the better.

Magic sounded about right. Still, what kind of magic was it that it was affecting the whole city like this? Whoever was doing it... they must've been really powerful and probably didn't have any good intentions with it.

Daye's suggestion to go back to the precinct was a good one. They were already fairly close to it, closer than he was to his home anyway. He doubted they would be able to find any good information on any of this there, but it was better than staying in the streets, vulnerable to being jumped at.

When she looked at her watch, Ryotaro got curious enough to look at the time himself, only to see that the hands weren't moving at all. "What the hell..." he muttered to himself, the freaky situation slowly starting to get to him.

He had no idea what was going on here, but be was glad that Daye had found him there. The feeling of eyes on him was feeling stronger than ever and he was quick to accept her invitation to get in her car. Her mention of calling her people prompting him to try to call Yu to check how he and Nanako were doing, but once he pulled out his cellphone, he found out that there was no signal.

"Don't bother, whatever this is, it's interfering with the signal," he told her as he got settled in the car, putting the seatbelt on. It also didn't escape his notice that the seconds on his cellphone's clock refused to move too. "Do you have any idea at all of what could be happening here?" He asked her as he put his cellphone back in his pocket.

No signal, watches weren't moving, and some creepy shit was happening around them. It did not sound like a good thing in Toby's books at all. The brunette kept on frowning and her eyes kept scanning around. She had no clue what any of this was except... well, it could have been a lot of really bad things. Things she didn't want to consider. Things that made her heart squeeze and her lungs want to stop working.

Michael's lands felt like this. The Calamity had happened like this. Toby took a carefully measured breath that was difficult for her but staying calm was more important. Staying calm and keeping on track. "Could be a couple of different things, a combination of things, or something all new." Toby couldn't say for certain but she did know one thing. "None of the shit it could be is good." She had closed her door and then locked everything, a small simple upgrade that had been put in so it wasn't manual anymore. The windows were up and Toby pulled off from the curb while she was putting on her seat belt.

Her eyes were glued to the road as she hit the gas. Toby quickly noticed that all the roads seemed empty. Lights also seemed to be frozen. No red, no green, and not October Daye doing even rolling stops as she went. There was a certain clear concentration on her face even before she started rattling off what the thing could be. "Either we've been pulled into a pocket dimension somehow," Which was Blind Michael's lands, except this wasn't the Summerlands by any means. "Or Pandora's decided its gunna do another hard reset." Which had a chilling effect down Toby's spine. Gilly. Her heart lurched but Mouse was with Gilly. Her daughter was protected.

"Last time I felt like this in a pocket dimension, there was a fucking god pulling the strings. And when Pandora hard reset a lot of bad shit happened. People died, world grew, everything skipped forward a hundred years." Toby knew that Dojima had no idea what the Calamity was. He hadn't been in Pandora long enough to have that sort of knowledge. She didn't think he had been here before and had been brought back either. She glanced in his direction as she took a tight corner, quickly trying to find their way back to where he needed to go, already thinking about making it back to her daughter before too long. Gilly was safe behind wards and had a God guard dog. She would be fine for a little bit while Toby made sure Dojima was safe.

Absolutely nothing of what Daye was telling him was reassuring in any way. Not that he expected any good news to come out, but part of him couldn't help but regret having asked in the first place.

The pocket dimension explanation sounded an awful lot like what he had heard of in passing regarding what happened in Inaba last year. Something about another world inside the TVs. If this was the same thing as back then, this place was going to get very dangerous very soon. That was where Adachi's victims were killed, after all, and nobody could ever figure out what they died from.

The other thing... Ryotaro had heard of something like that in passing. Something about a "calamity" that changed the whole world of Pandora. He had done some research on it after hearing about it and all he came out with was conflicting information about whether such a thing really happened, but Daye seemed to have experienced it first hand and he had no reason to not believe in her words. If Pandora really was doing something like that again...

... He could only hope Yu would keep Nanako safe until he could get back to them.

"Sounds like we're screwed no matter what," he complained, followed by a disgruntled sigh.

Thankfully, the trip to the precinct was peaceful enough. Ryotaro left the car and went to get inside, but he was faced with locked doors. Doors that he didn't seem to be able to open no matter what. It wasn't even supposed to be locked. There were night watchmen that used the place, so why was it locked? He even tried to knock or call for someone inside, but nobody showed, he couldn't even hear a single sound coming from inside.

Luckily, Daye seemed to have been waiting for him to go in before leaving, so he could go back to her and report on what was going on. "It's locked. It's not even supposed to be locked but no matter what I do, it just won't open. There doesn't seem to be anyone inside either, but I know there were people there when I left," he explained, his body tense, eyes narrow, and his voice sounding very much on edge despite trying to remain calm.

Were they screwed no matter what? Toby never liked it when those situations came up. How many times had she been told that something couldn’t be done? That it was impossible to do or accomplish? That no one had ever done it before? And then... she did it. Toby didn’t care what people thought or assumed. She didn’t even care what happened to her in those situations. That didn’t matter. Keeping everyone she could safe and sound from whatever the fuck Pandora had g oing on was her top priority. She didn’t see anyone but Dojima around, so he was protective target number one.

For the moment.

Dojima hadn’t reacted to the Calamity and Toby didn’t even realize he might have heard of it before. They were silent for most of the trip over and then Toby left her car idling at the curb while she stood in the half open door to watch him. Her eyes were narrowed and drifting around, but she knew she could cover the distance in a heartbeat if something jumped out at Dojima. He quickly turned around and came back. Toby could read how tense he was in his body language. The man was normally stressed in general, something she still thought was kind of hilarious, but there was a difference.

”Won’t open? I’ll try. Just don’t bill me for the door, yeah?” She flashed a tight lipped smile, trying to reassure him as best she could with words. Perhaps if they had been closer Toby might have reached out… but instead she moved past him at a quick pace and was at the door. Dojima was a decently strong looking guy. He had more weight on him than Toby could ever hope to have on a basic level, but she had her aura and Toby could punch like a freight train with it.

Toby decided not to play around. She put a hand on the door handle to keep it where it was loosely, just to ensure it wouldn’t go rocketing into anyone on the other side, then she cocked her left arm back. Then she punched the damn thing at full force. There was a resounded crack to go along with it, but all Toby got in return was some bruised knuckles. The changeling was cursing under her breath and then she was walking back to the car. ”Let’s… check some other doors.” There was a growing suspicion in her, something that made her body language almost match Dojima’s.

She started to point across the street when something moved out of the corner of her eye again. This time she saw the glint of a gun and instinct kicked in. Toby had been standing by Dojima when a BANG went off, and her hand had snagged the back of his shirt to pull him to the ground without even thinking of the fact that he was a cop. For the moment, she just didn’t want him getting fucking shot. Toby was crouched beside him, in between him and the shooter but the shooter… ”That thing ain’t fucking human.” What the fuck was that?

It didn't surprise Ryotaro in the slightest that Daye's first reaction to hearing he couldn't get the door to open was to try to break it down herself. He knew that she likely had some kind of superhuman strength to go along with the fact she could take bullets to the face without a care, but he couldn't help but feel like he'd been assumed to be just too weak to be able to force it open on his own.

He followed after her and silently watched as Daye fought against the door and lost. The punch she gave made a powerful impact that definitely would've been good enough to at least punch a hole through it normally but... it was like nothing had happened to it at all. The only other solution she could come up with being looking for other doors, something that Ryotaro doubted would work, given the circumstances.

"I don't think that's going to work," he voiced his thoughts, eyeing other buildings in the area. "Call me pessimistic, but I have a feeling--"

Before he could finish his sentence, he felt himself being pulled down at the same time the sound of a gunshot echoed out. Without any warning, he found himself on the ground with Daye by him, looking toward the source of the noise. Ryotaro looked as well, only to see... a fat creature that looked like it was wearing a police uniform, but what made it look very inhuman was the fact it had a gaping hole in its belly, with a strange yellow key hanging in that empty space.

"What the hell...?" Ryotaro muttered, pulling his own gun from its holster.

He began to stand up, moving a little to the side so Daye wouldn't get in the way of a shot. His eyes were focused on the monster, watching its movements, and as soon as Ryotaro saw it prepare to take another shot, he fired before it. The shot hit somewhere in the creature's warped head, but it didn't look like it did any significant damage to it, all it did was stun the monster momentarily.

"Of course bullets don't work..." Ryotaro grumbled, hands tightly gripping the his handgun, ready to fire another shot if needed.

Toby didn't want to start shit when she wasn't the cop. Get shot at first. That was the idea behind most of Toby's attempts at staying on the right side of the law. The brunette preferred to purposefully pick a fight to get the other guy to attack. Toby knew that she pushed that line sometimes but not while Dojima was standing right next to her. Not when she really did believe in shooting second to make sure she was doing the right thing. It was an odd turn of emotions inside of her, but there were layers to it. Which was why her hand was on her weapon in the next instant.

It shot again, Dojima shot back, and Toby saw the exact same result he did. "Fuck." Toby didn't know what any of this was but she didn't like a bit of it. Was there a threshold or did it ust regen all the time? Only one way to test it. Her left hand came up and the illusion over her weapons snapped. Blades and guns, all rolled into one, and she aimed easily at the thing's head as well. Two more shots, one after another, with her hand easily taking the recoil from the gun. Her grip was steady. Those two bullets sank into its head just as Dojima's had. It recovered both times.

"Mmmmm, might be good to get back into the car, Dojima." Toby didn't want to test her luck too hard or too far. Gilly was a-- Gilly was at home alone. Or with a babysitter who was completely human and normal. And this thing in front of her was shooting at them. Toby felt some of that confidence in her step suddenly falter. Then a second weird thing came shambling around the corner of the building and Toby moved back around the car quick as you please. She was behind the wheel before the second one had raised its gun. "Let's go." Instead there was nothing but tension in her shoulders.

Something had clicked over in October as she had crossed back around her car. A sudden realization that while her daughter did have a guard dog, this was Pandora. This could have been like the Calamity. Qrow had died on that couch, in her arms, and he had been a very skilled person. Stronger than she was. These things could take three bullets in the head and still attack. Her heart was suddenly racing far more than she liked. Time to get gone. As soon as Dojima was in the car, before he had even shut the door all the way, Toby was starting to move. Once that door was shut, she hit the gas. "Your place first?" Gilly still had Mouse. Nanko did not. For a little bit, it would be okay. Gilly also had the start of her aura. She was far more... capable than a regular kid. Toby would just have to be quick about it.

What happened next shouldn't have surprised Ryotaro as much as it did, but Daye pulling out a weird sword gun kind of weapon out of nowhere and shooting the monster with it caught him so offguard he almost forgot about the danger in front of them. Despite the showy act, however, the creature cared about her bullets just as much as it did his, which was to say, it completely ignored them outside of being stunned by the impact.

Daye wisely pointed out that it was better for them to get back into the car, to which Ryotaro just nodded before starting to make a run for it. He didn't even look at the second one making its way over, but one stray shot came very close to hitting him, to the point where he hear the wind buzz as the bullet flew by his ear. He quickly got into the car and closed the door as Daye started it up.

"The hell kind of TV show did you come from?! How did you pull a weapon out of thin air like that?!" He finally asked, his voice loud and agitated. Daye's magic trick was the least of his problems right now, but yet his brain focused on that particular thing more than the rest anyway.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady his mind and relax his body a little. His eyes glanced at their surroundings, specifically the buildings. They all looked... empty. Even at this hour, you could at least see the occasional window with the lights on, or at least some glow that indicated that someone was still up and about, likely watching TV or something of the sort, but there was nothing at all anywhere. That coupled with the completely closed off precinct... it wasn't looking good.

"You're the one with a car, so I guess you should drop me off first. Unless you're inviting me to spend the night at your place," he answered her question with a detached tone, as if he wasn't even paying attention to what he was saying as his eyes instead focused on the ghost city around him.

The hell kind of TV show did you come from? That was a hilarious line but Toby sort of hesitated to respond. She obviously wasn't from a tv show where she was from but Toby had met plenty of people who were from shows or movies back home. Case in point, Captain James T. Kirk. What if she was from a tv show to someone else? What if someone knew her like she knew Captain Kirk? Suddenly Toby's chest felt all sorts of tight. That was an unsettling feeling. She couldn't be sure how to handle... any of that.

Thankfully she had other things to deal with. Like driving the damn car away from the whatever the fuck that thing had been. Not human. Monster. Monster seemed like a good word for that. "I do illusion magic, Dojima." She just answered him directly. Dojima was agitated but Toby had switched over into damage control mode. Something she was good at. If anything, Toby knew how to work under pressure because a good chunk of her life had been under pressure. This was almost a normal state of being for Toby.

Unless you're inviting me to spend the night at your place. Normally Toby would have laughed at that one. Instead she was staring straight out the windshield with a whole different set of thoughts running through her mind. "My house has some stronger warding than yours. Also a magical guard dog who is also a god." Dojima would have already met Mouse at this point. The giant dog had been there from shortly after her hospital stay. Harry had insisted. "If this shit is by your place it might be a good idea for the three of you to come over to our place. Probably safer." Toby was thinking about safety. Dojima, Yu, and Nanako's safety. She could just as easily look out for them as she could Gilly and Dojima was obviously a good shot. He'd be back up in case Toby needed to be in two places at once.

"I'm also neighbors with Superman and friends with his girlfriend Wanda. Other side of me is my friend Nick. I'm sure they'll all come camp out too if this is something like last time." Sticking together was always best. Toby knew that not everyone had a social network like she did but she had forged strong bonds in the amount of time she had been in Pandora. She wanted to look out for them too. She might have already been calculating how to get other people to her place as well. As many as she could, to buckle down in case the world decided to reset once more.

Toby hit the gas a little bit more, no longer stopping for signs or lights. No one else had been seen on the roads and Toby was done following the law when it was obvious that Pandora had taken matters into its own hands. She wasn't going all out but there was a noticeable difference in how she was driving. Curving around corners faster than a normal person might have. Even taking a few shortcuts without saying much. She had figured this city out with how much she combed over the streets. "I got home too late last time." Her voice had dropped a touch and she remembered how the house had been torn apart. Qrow dying on the couch... her grip on the wheel tightened until her knuckles were white but she just kept driving. Skidding up to Dojima's place as soon as possible.

A dog that was also a god...? Was that what the dog in Daye's house was? There were a bunch of questions regarding how that even worked coming up in Ryotaro's head but this wasn't the time for it. Whatever the case, it looked like Daye's house was well protected and she had strong neighbors as well (and he strangely felt like he had heard the name Superman somewhere before) but... there was something about this that didn't feel right. A feel of dread in his gut that felt like a hole was opening right there... kinda like those freaky monsters.

Better not think of it like that.

"Sounds like your neighborhood is pretty safe," he said offhandedly, mainly just trying to let her know he was listening.

Ryotaro didn't care about how Daye was driving. The city looked so empty, the chance of an accident happening were slim. He probably would've been doing the same thing if he was on the wheel. Unfortunately, being a passenger meant that there wasn't much he could do other than sit there and keep an eye on his surroundings while talking to Daye. She kept mentioning the similar thing that had last time, including some kind of personal story about what happened in her last encounter with a situation like this. While he didn't want to pry, he was starting to think he was gonna have to dig a little deeper than this if he wanted to really understand what was going on here.

"What happened last time?" he asked as directly as he could. Whether Daye was going to tell him any specifics or not was up to her, he wasn't going to judge either way. He just felt like he had to at least try to ask her about it.

Toby’s house was well protected because she had been through enough bullshit in this world to be at least a little prepared for… well, whatever this was. Pandora’s bullshit. ”Well, I’ve had issues with things trying to get in my house to start shit.” She was mostly speaking her thoughts out loud but Toby was pretty certain Dojima would have been aware of those kinds of situations considering where he worked. He likely would have seen plenty of weird by this stage, even if it was overwhelming for a normal sort of guy.

What happened last time? There was something in Dojima’s voice that suggested he needed an answer. A real answer. Her fingers curled a little tighter on the steering wheel as she tried to remember what had happened. The facts, not the emotional portions. ”The world ended. Time stopped and I don’t remember the exact amount of time it took to end, but it was at least over a day.” It had felt like longer to Toby but she couldn’t pin down any exacts. The changeling had been wildly reacting to everything around her.

”Everything use to be smaller. Five towns. All of Pandora would fit into one region. The g round kept shaking, then the sky started falling… people died.” She felt those words woodenly leave her lips. ”The guy I was seeing died. He came back to life right away, after the world reset into something much larger than it was. Time skipped forward a hundred years. Pandora Town became Pandopolis.” She trailed off for a moment as they suddenly pulled up to Dojima’s place. Toby knew it was a lot of information for him but she also recalled their very first conversation when she was cursed. Toby had hinted around to what had happened then even if Dojima wasn’t fully aware of it. I woke up with a modeling job and my ass all over the internet. Dojima had accepted that in stride. Would he do the same here?

”This feels a bit different and Pandora doesn’t have a habit of repeating events to my knowledge.” Toby had been in Pandora for years. She didn’t think the world would end again so soon. Or reset. Or whatever the hell it had been. ”Come on. Let’s get you inside.” If he didn’t want to come over to her place then the least Toby could do was make sure he got inside his home alright. She turned her car off despite how it was parked in front of his house and then she opened the door to take a look around. All business, despite everything that was running through her mind. Toby was worried about Gilly but she knew she had to take care of everything one at a time. Dojima and his kids first, then Gilly. Her wards and Mouse would hold until then.

"The world ended". Ryotaro was already at a loss the moment he heard those words. He already knew whatever she was going to say wasn't going to be nice, but that went beyond his expectations in a way that was downright scary to think about.

So Pandora used to be a lot smaller, but then after some kind of "natural disaster" that destroyed everything, the world returned even bigger than before. People died in the event, including the guy Daye had been dating before, and then they simply came back to life in the new world. To think something like that had already happened... Ryotaro couldn't help but wonder if it'd happen again, his thoughts going immediately to Nanako.

"I'm... sorry. That must've been a very traumatic experience," he said, struggling to find with the right words to say.

Leaving that aside for the time being, he had gotten to his apartment building. Stepping off Daye's car, Ryotaro walked up to the closed door with a feeling of dread creeping up on him every step of the way. Then, when he tried to open it, it was locked.

"I knew it..." he exhaled, letting go of the breath he was holding, "Daye..." he looked over to her, "whatever place this is, it's not Pandopolis. All the buildings look empty and we can't even enter them. Those monsters we saw earlier... somehow we were both taken away from Pandopolis and thrown here."

He just couldn't figure out when or how it happened. He was on his way back home from the precinct and then, suddenly, the world around him began changing. It had to have been at that moment that it happened, but he had no idea how he was taken when he didn't see or feel anything out of the ordinary before it happened.

"We need to figure out what's going on, because otherwise we're just going to be running around in circles until those things kill us," he added, his voice sounding confident in what he was saying, but the seriousness of his tone couldn't fully hide the fear behind it.

This wasn't the kind of thing he was prepared to deal with, but it didn't look he had a choice here. If he wanted to see Nanako again, he had to find a way out.

Traumatic? Had it been... Toby's eyes dropped for a second. It had been traumatic and yet... she wasn't sure how to feel about it now. Not with all the other things that had come through. Had it been moving in with Qrow or had it been Qrow's death that had started to unravel their relationship? Now wasn't the time to think about any of that shit. There were more important things to handle than her retrospective pin pointing of where shit had really started to hit the fan. Or kicking more of her emotions around while shit was going down now.

Toby watched Doima move to the front door and she felt her heart thumping in her chest. The brunette wanted to keep herself calm but she could feel bits of her control slip away as Dojima announced they weren't in Pandora. Her eyes flicked back around and Toby felt her lungs tighten. There was a panic attack building in Toby's body. There was a tense feeling because she didn't know what this was. Not exactly and Gilly was... would she be able to get to Gilly?

No. Toby had a feeling she already had her answer. Her door wasn't going to open any easier. That panic continued to grow in her chest. "I..." Her voice trailed off for a second and Toby didn't know what to say. She was at a loss for a second. Wheels were turning but they weren't gaining any purchase in her minds. There was one thing she could make sure of though. Her eyes snapped back to Dojima and she knew this was going to be one of those moments. Reassuring him was her first instinct but Toby meant every word. "Nothing's gunna kill you, Dojima. I'll get you through this. Promise." That was who she was now, wasn't it?

If Toby had something to concentrate on, then she would be able to keep all her panic bottled up. "Normally I go looking for the source of the trouble. I just... can't pick out a direction where it might be coming from." And could she keep Dojima safe while trying to fix it? Toby figured she was going to have to try. This was what superheroes did, right? Juggle five thousand things while saving the day. "Unless you've got any ideas?" There might have been an odd look in her eye and a little bit of a shake to one of her hands. Toby was working very hard to keep herself on track. To keep herself calm.

Gilly. This was all about Gilly. She had to make sure that Gilly was safe and that meant stopping... whatever the hell this was as soon as possible. She'd just have to power her way through it like she always did. Toby just needed to find her target first.

Ryotaro could tell that the situation was starting to get to Daye as well. Despite that, she still tried to reassure him, telling him that she wouldn't let him die. He couldn't but feel like he should've been the one saying these things but, well, he couldn't deny that Daye was much more suited for this kind of thing than him.

"It's not like I was planning to just roll over and die here," he said, still tense, but for the most part managing to keep his fears in check. Still, he appreciated her reassurance and it was enough for the hint of a smile to manifest for a brief moment.

He was not going to let Nanako lose her father after having already lost her mother. He couldn't allow that to happen no matter what. That and, obviously, he didn't want to die, especially not like this. If, however, the worst came to pass, Nanako still had Yu with her. Ryotaro trusted his nephew to look after his daughter if he couldn't and that thought was the main thing that allowed him to keep his cool in this kind of situation.

"Sorry, I haven't got a clue of where to go from here," he shook his head, eyes glancing at his surroundings. "But I doubt we're the only people in here," he folded his arms, "The buildings might be empty, but it's possible that other people got taken here just like us and maybe they might be able to tell you something about what's going on."

They might also be in trouble, if the monsters from earlier were any indicator. While Ryotaro's job was more investigating than really keeping the peace at this point, he still felt like he had to protect others from danger, even if he knew he was severely outclassed in this kind of situation.

Dojima seemed in control to Toby. Then again the man always seemed so effortlessly in control of himself that he didn't look much different from how Toby normally saw him. Had she seen him lose his cool at all yet? Probably not. In fact, Toby was pretty damn certain she hadn't. How he kept himself so calm she didn't know but the changeling had always been a pretty emotional person. It was hard not to be with the life she had lived.

Her mind started whirling through a bunch of different possibilities even as Dojima continued to speak. Where could they go? What kind of help could they find? How could they get out of this damn... whatever the hell they were in? Toby didn't have any answers but when was that different from any other time in her life? She always felt like she never had enough answers.

"We can check a few other buildings and drive around. I've got enough gas for a few hours of straight driving." They wouldn't have to stop any time soon but Toby didn't even know if gas was a thing in this... whatever the hell it was. "Would you..." Toby trailed off for a second and bit down on her bottom lip. Gilly. It was hard to breath around the pain that was so sharply centered in her chest, even if there was little evidence of it on the outside.

"I need to try my place." Instead of asking for permission, Toby just laid it out there that she needed to check on her own daughter. There were a thousand reasons why, even if she had a feeling that this would be repeated at her own house, but Toby still needed to go and check. She had to confirm for herself that Gilly was out of reach, otherwise she'd be thinking about it the entire time. The changeling nodded towards the car, indicating for Dojima to get in so they could roll.

He just had to survive. If he focused his energy completely on getting out of this hell, everything was going to be fine. Panicking was not an option. Yu was with Nanako, reminding himself of that was important in order to keep himself from being too rash in his decisions. Plus, he had Daye with him. She wasn't invincible or anything, but he did feel safer with her around. Things would be way worse if she wasn't around, that much he was sure of.

Daye's suggestion was as good of an option as anything else they could do. Ryotaro clearly wasn't going back into his apartment, he knew this much already. However, despite the evidence, Daye still felt the need to go home and see if she could reach Gilly. It was a very understandable reaction, to want to make absolutely sure there was no way back in. He was still confident that these buildings weren't even the same ones as their actual homes, but in moments like these a parent's instinct took over any kind of logical thinking.

"Alright, let's go," he nodded, getting back inside the car, "maybe we'll find some kind of clue along the way," he voiced his thoughts as he buckled up.

Their destination was likely going to end in disappointment, so he kept his sights onto finding a way out. Going around this messed up city was better than doing nothing, and if they came across something of note, then it was worth investigating. Although... convincing Daye to make this kind of detour was probably going to be a challenge.

Toby wasn't invincible but there weren't a lot of things that could take her down either. If something was strong enough to take her down, then Dojima wouldn't have stood a chance. There was a list of sorts ticking in the background of her mind, trying to remember the details of other similar situations. Almost everything like this had some sort of end. Either a way to escape or some sort of... fuck if Toby knew. Time limit. Something.

They just needed to find the source and she'd be able to get them both out of this. The problem was figuring out where the fuck it was. She gritted her teeth even as she put the car into first and pulled them back out on the road. If Dojima did see something of note between here and there, then that was all well and good. If it meant solving the goddamn problem, the changeling would pull over in a heart beat.

The bigger problem was the things she saw lurking between buildings. Not exactly those weird, fat, not human... cop things? Toby really didn't know what to call them but there were other shapes and sizes of things lurking around. She didn't like any of it but she wanted to make sure that she was keeping them safe on top of everything else. Juggling through a bunch of different priorities was just how Toby rolled during these situations. It was how you survived the crazy.

Something large was blocking one street, so Toby shot down another, drifting around the corner without slowing down. They were still a good distance away from her house but Toby had managed to get her breathing steady. There was a goal, something to work towards, and that meant she'd stay calm for the moment. Toby didn't quite feel too helpless. "I don't... Normally we have to find where this shit started. Or who's doing it." She was almost mumbling it all out loud, trying to put the pieces together even as she took a couple more turns. "Streets aren't moving." Which was another odd thing. Things seemed to be static. Exactly as they had been that morning. What the fuck was going on?
