“Yeah,” he replied bitterly, glancing over at the lady, Amy.

Luke moved to the middle of the walkway in case of any hands reaching out from the cells, then headed over to the other end. Surprisingly, nothing leapt out and attacked them, but that good news was countered by bad. A smooth, seamless wall had replaced the door that he’d used earlier to enter this formerly nondescript hallway.

“Oh no!” he groaned out in dismay. “The door’s gone! I guess we’ll have to go back in the room with the stuffed animals. See if there’s another way out.”

He huffed out a sigh and stomped back up the walkway, which only caused bits of his broken boots to flake to the bald concrete. It was coarse and cold on the exposed parts of his feet. Boy, did he wish he had a spare pair of boots!

Luke reached the place where they’d just come from and found another smooth, seamless wall instead of a door.

No!” he whined. “This is impossible! We’re trapped here!”

A sharp, electronic hissing and spluttering sound started up as though in agreement or rebuttal, which was joined by the flashing of pale blue lights. Shadows of the bars danced across the floor and walls, tall and thin and black like a copse of limbless trees. Huh?

Luke turned his head to see what was causing the disturbance and glimpsed a flashing sign mounted on top of one of the cells. EXIT, it read. And would you believe it was the cell where the slimy, labored breathing was at its loudest?

"I'm more than willing to break a real window if we find one," Amy proposed as the walls suddenly lost the doors, "whatever gets us out of this place is fine by me." It wouldn't be the first time her solution involved creative use of force.

In the back of her mind, she felt slight pity for Luke when she noticed the ruined boots. That couldn't be comfortable, but she didn't exactly have anything on her to offer. Even if she was willing to offer her own, they wouldn't fit him, anyway.

When they turned around and walked right into another doorless wall, she let out an aggravated groan. "Of course it's not that easy," she muttered, "of course not. Why would it be?" Part of this haunted house must be utter tedium.

She watched quietly as the room started messing with them even more, eventually saying, "great, just great. You think this is another thing that's going to try to kill us, or is it just trying to freak us out? Probably the former, if I had to guess."

“Yeah,” he gave the same bitter response as before. “You’d win a sabacc game with all this guessing.”

He frowned at the flashing sign, trying to decide on a course of action. They couldn’t wait here the rest of their lives! They had to go through that cell even if it was a trap. Action was always better than no action! Anyhow, he bet whatever was planning to attack them had never seen a lightsaber until now.

Luke unclipped it from his utility belt, which was in way better shape than his torn, warped tunic and boots. He ignited his lightsaber and its white green glow burned away some of the dense darkness inside the cell. Its soft metallic hum made him feel an awful lot more confident. It was a flashlight as well as a powerful Jedi weapon.

He tried the door of the cell, and unsurprisingly, it swung open easily. Face schooled into a look of quiet determination, he stepped inside, his buzzing lightsaber held out before him. The slimy, labored breathing sped up as though in excitement that, horribly, verged on sexual gratification. His stomach churned with disgust. What in the Force’s name was making that awful sound?

Luke shone his lightsaber around the cell, but failed to uncover the source of it. He did, however, spot a large hole in one of the concrete walls, which looked just large enough to accommodate a person of average size. A thick, rotten sewer smell billowed out of its shadowy maw.

“Oh no,” Luke groaned to Amy. “I think we have to go through there next.”

"Sab-what?" Amy muttered under her breath. She knew other worlds had weird things, but this was a new one to her. Whatever, no time getting caught up figuring out random quirks of other worlds while she was trying to stay alive.

"Oh, ok, that's... new," she muttered as she side-eyed Luke's glowing weapon. It definitely looked like something she wouldn't want to be on the other side of. Glad to have someone with that kind of thing on her side.

Still, she was more than happy to stay behind him as he walked ahead, training her crossbow on the darkness, just in case anything tried to get close. It wasn't being a coward, it was fulfilling a useful role in this arrangement.

"Great, I love everything about this," she deadpanned, "this is definitely not high on the list of worst things I've been through. Well..." Thinking about it, she had a lot of things on that list, so it wasn't definitive.

"I've smelled worse things," she admitted, "but that's not really saying much. We're not getting anywhere by just sitting here, though."

“Right,” he agreed with Amy, a hopeful smile tugging at his lips.

Luke took a deep breath, then stepped into the gaping hole. The white green glow of his softly humming lightsaber lit up red velvety walls, which seemed pretty out of place here.

As he ventured deeper into the tunnel, the red bouncy ground grew covered in a thick, foul smelling substance. Cold liquid oozed easily into his ruined boots and squelched between his toes. He couldn’t help but groan out in disgust. At least he wasn’t completely submerged in the grime, like he had been when a dianoga had dragged him beneath the waste in that trash compactor.

Boy, he sure hoped there weren’t any dianogas in this tunnel…

He’d certainly never heard one breathe that way, but then again, his encounters with them were blessedly rare. The rapid breathing was joined now by a steady, muffled thump, like a flesh covered stick hitting a drum. What was making those sounds?

Luke tried to focus on something else by asking Amy a question: “So what made you come inside the house in the first place?”

The pulsing green glow of his lightsaber revealed that the red velvety tunnel plunged steeply downhill, which would prove treacherous to navigate, especially with the slimy, waterlogged ground! Warm waves of that fusty sewer stench hit him in the face and stirred the tattered threads of his tunic.

Amy tried her best not to breathe in too deeply as they walked. This hallway was absolutely rank. It reminded her of a lot of places she'd gone to scavenge before. Alleys and streets covered in bodies that had been rotting for who knew how long.

The sudden question tossed her way was a bit startling. She'd gotten so stuck in her own head that it didn't even occur to her that they might have anything to talk about. "Oh, just boredom, I guess," she answered with a shrug, "I heard these places were creepy, not dangerous. If I knew what kind of crap would actually happen, I'd probably just watch TV or something."

When they came across the downhill trajectory, she groaned. "We're going to have to be really careful here," she muttered, "I don't want to be touching this stuff with anything other than a boot."

Amy’s last remark bitterly reminded Luke of his ruined boots and the slimy, viscous substance squelching between his toes. Ugh. No. He sure didn’t wanna fall face first into a puddle of that muck.

“Careful?” he repeated with a confident smile. “I’m real good at being careful.”

And in his next step, he slipped on the slick ground and began to fall. He yelped and plunged his lightsaber into one of the red velvety walls to steady his balance and keep from pitching down that steep, steep tunnel.

The chamber juddered as though reacting in agony to the burning pierce of his lightsaber, then was followed by a shrill, hideous scream. He smelt cooking flesh and boiling sewage.

That sound, that stench… The red velvety walls and the red bouncy ground… The muffled breathing and the steady thump… Luke put all these things together and his heart gave a jolt of terror.

“We’re in something’s mouth!” he yelled. “Run back! Run back!

Luke wrenched his lightsaber out of the “wall” with a hissing pop, then whirled around to sprint back the way they’d come. The “chamber” started to shake and tremble more violently and he staggered around as though he’d consumed too many “Fuzzy Tauntauns”.

Amy almost made a sarcastic quip at Luke's assertion, but she didn't even have time before he nearly fell on his ass. This was the guy she thought was going to kill her not an hour ago? Sure, he was a giant wolf at the time, but she couldn't say she was feeling intimidated anymore.

"Ama-" she started to say before the hallway itself seemed to react. The noise and the stench and everything was adding up to an ugly picture, but it wasn't until Luke yelled it out that she was willing to really accept the idea.

"Oh no," she muttered, taking a few steps backwards before making her escape. How did they not notice this before? They had to move, if the thing's tongue started moving then they'd never be able to get out.

“Go! Go! Go!” Luke yelled as he stumble-dashed back the way they’d come through the red velvety “tunnel”.

Luke glimpsed a disc of dim light up ahead, which he figured was the exit. He put on an extra spurt of clumsy, staggering speed, but it was too late. The mouth shut and sealed them inside. They would’ve been plunged into darkness had he not still been holding his glowing lightsaber.

“Oh no!” he groaned out in dismay. “We’re trapped!”

Disembodied laughter rang out around them. It was as if something had deliberately tricked them and was pleased with its results!

Amy didn't really need the encouragement to keep running, but she wasn't bothered enough to yell anything back at Luke. At least he wasn't doing anything harmful, just a little annoying. Besides, she was too freaked out to have more than a twinge of annoyance.

She was so close to getting out, when suddenly, the opening shut. They were stuck, as Luke so helpfully pointed out. The sudden sensation of looming death was a good motivator for Amy to get a little upset about the whole thing.

"No, no, no!" she cried, running right up to the closed spot, "open, open dammit!" She punctuated her yelling with some smacks with the handle of her crossbow. The laughter only made her hit it harder, desperate for a way out.

Luke was ashamed to admit that it took him a couple minutes of staring helplessly at Amy and listening to her cuss before he realized that he was holding the key to their cell. The glowing green, quietly buzzing key.

“Oh, I’m so stupid sometimes!” he muttered bitterly to himself.

Luke spaced apart his feet, tightened his grip on his lightsaber and sunk it all the way down to the hilt into one of the velvet red “walls”. He burn-sliced a hole through it as easily as if it had been molded out of wax. The hardest part was trying not to gag on the stink of cooking flesh, which possessed a foul undertone of rotten sewage. Ugh!

The creature they were inside uttered hideous steel scraping against steel screeches, the “tunnel” shaking and shuddering worse than before around them. If they weren’t careful, they’d fall back down its throat into moist darkness!

“This way!” Luke called to Amy.

He burst out the hole he’d roast-carved into the creature and landed on his knees. The sharp white brightness of their new surroundings stung his eyes and blinded him. He blinked rapidly to try to bring the world back into focus, his nostrils still full of the smell of dirty, burning flesh.

Amy had been in too much of a panic to even think about Luke's weapon. Feeling trapped in a place with only green light to see by felt a little too much like home, so it wasn't until he started cutting a way out that she realized what was going on.

Once he did, she let out a sigh of relief. The smell was more of the same in her mind, so she just did her best to keep from gagging too much. Besides, it was more important to keep her feet under her when the whole place started recoiling from the pain of his light sword.

"You don't have to tell me twice," she quipped as they jumped out of the tunnel back into the cells they just came from.

Oh, wait, they didn't, because that'd make sense.

Panting behind her mask, she cursed a few more times under her breath, eyes closed. This whole night was more trouble than it was worth. All she wanted was to stop thinking about all of the crazy stuff she was dealing with, now she had even worse shit to handle.

She was too busy bemoaning their sorry fate that she didn't even notice the new room they were in. It was much sparser than the one they left, mostly bare and empty, save for a few notable features. One was the simple washbasin in the middle, filled with surprisingly clean water (not that it'd be a good idea to try anything in this place).

Even more striking was what was on the wall right across from them. Instead of a new door or a way out, there was simply a mirror, one big enough to take up the entire rest of the wall. Reflected in it were Luke and Amy, looking as exhausted as someone who barely made it out of some disgusting mouth should.

Luke’s eyes adjusted to the bright white glare of the room. His first urge was to glance back at the creature that had nearly become their prison, but there was no creature. There was a hole in the wall behind them, the edges of the brick neat and charred as though he’d cut through it with his lightsaber. Beyond, a slimy tunnel stretched off into thick shadows.

His eyes went wide with amazement. No! They’d been inside a living, breathing, screeching creature, not a wall!

He turned his head, with a bounce of shaggy hair, to look at Amy. “I didn’t imagine that, right? We were inside a monster?”

A vivid light shimmered in the periphery of his vision. He whipped his head back to see their reflections, including that of his shimmering lightsaber, in the huge mirror that stretched across the wall opposite them. His fair hair was stuck up at odd angles as though he’d just woken, while his pale flesh peaked between rips in his strained and stained tunic. He glimpsed his toes, too, peeping from the tattered ruins of his boots.

Luke felt a pinch of self-consciousness and embarrassment. Boy, he sure looked like a mess - and in front of Amy! Hopefully, she understood that his scruffiness was on account of his lycanthropy. He certainly never chose to dress this way!

His untidiness had distracted him so much that he’d almost missed something else that was off about his reflection. In the mirror, the vivid shimmer of his lightsaber wasn’t green. It was red.

Luke’s mind reeled with surprise and confusion. At first, he could do little except gaze dumbly from his green lightsaber to its red glowing reflection.

How could the mirror possibly reflect a different colored blade? Was the transparisteel made of a special material? But then why did all of the other colors match their real life counterparts? Could the house have been playing another mind trick on him? Although what purpose did reflecting a different colored blade serve? Was the red light to mock him with the dark side of the Force?

Luke was about to mention the lightsaber to Amy when their reflections stepped out of the mirror as casually as if it had been a doorway. The mirror Amy approached the real one, her eyes wide and feverish bright with a crazed rage. Luke’s reflection glared at him and raised his buzzing red lightsaber in an offensive stance.

"I don't know what is going on in this place," Amy replied, staring at the brick wall as if personally offended her. This whole experience was clearly intending to make them go crazy as possible. Probably for its own wicked amusement.

It was by then that Amy actually noticed the mirror, mostly thanks to Luke's sword-thing being reflected back at them. Weirdly, it was red in the mirror. If that meant something, she couldn't even hazard a guess, too confused to look deeper.

She also dismissed anything related to their appearances. Since her world was more ruins than civilization, the idea of judging someone for not being completely put-together seemed hypocritical.

Those questions were quickly silenced when the figures in the mirror stepped out and stared the duo down. Of course, Edgar immediately started cawing and flapping his wings in terror, but Amy just stared right back at her own.

"What, are you going to try and say hur-" she started to quip, but was cut off when her double let out an almost primal cry of rage and charged at her. That, Amy had to admit, she was not ready for. Her crossbow even flew out of her hands, she was so startled.

"You killed him!" the double shrieked, "you killed him! You monster!" Her attacks weren't actually that dangerous or anything, she was mostly just flailing at Amy as she blocked her ineffectual scratches. Still, it was a rather disturbing turn of events.

The Mirror Amy let out a hair rising cry, then flailed and scratched at the real one. A raven with snow white feathers also swooped out of the mirror and began to shriek and peck at its coal black counterpart. Luke could only gape wide-eyed at the display.

Was that true? Had Amy really killed somebody? It was pretty hard to believe in light of how fairly she’d treated him. If she’d killed somebody, then she must’ve had a good reason. Self-defense. A tragic accident.

Luke’s instincts were to extricate the real Amy from her violent, screaming double, but he never got opportunity ‘cos his own came leaping at him. The Mirror Luke struck out with his red lightsaber in a move that was supposed to burn-sever his opponent’s head from his shoulders…

Except Luke scooted back and flung up his green lightsaber. The two weapons collided with an angry buzz and crackle, which did little to dissuade Mirror Luke. He swiped and slashed at the real one again and again, who was forced to duck and dart, roll and wind, his lightsaber hitting the other on and off.

How in the Force’s name was Luke supposed to end this fight!? He didn’t wanna maim or kill his clone! What if it affected him, too? And how was he meant to help the real Amy when he had to keep defending himself?

“Why are you doing this?” Luke cried to the two clones (three including the bird’s) as he continued to block whining and hissing blows.

But his double failed to reply, nor did any emotion cross his hard, pale face. He stared at Luke with eyes that slowly shifted from bright blue to tawny yellow.

Amy was too busy wrestling with herself to even care what was happening with Luke. It was hard to think about anyone but herself while she was attacking... herself. And she could feel every bit of damage Edgar took as his copy attacked.

"I didn't!" she yelled back, starting to scratch at the double herself, "I had to save him somehow!"

"It's your fault he was there! You ruined everyone's lives!" was all her hysterical double needed to say to knock the wind out of Amy even more than being knocked to the ground did. That was quickly followed by her getting pissed off.

"You... just shut up!" she cried before pulling both of her legs back enough to kick her double right off. With her ability to move back, she tried to roll over to grab her crossbow. As soon as she did, though, she was suddenly lurched backwards. Her double had grabbed her hood and was practically strangling Amy with it.
