Jonah had been doing jobs on Harmony Point for a good bit of time, and he'd only run into Sheriff Clint once or twice more after his initial arrival on the planet. So when he received a summons to come to meet his mother Jonah was surprised but intrigued and road out to the little lake outside of the Harmony that their family home rested on. And by little he meant it was a massive lake, one of the few green places on Harmony Point the dusty red ground slowly gave way to lush grass and dirt and soon he was moving between a a sort of tunnel of trees the lined the path to what he knew to be a plantation house, although he saw no one working the fields, he only saw armed men every now and then and plenty of the strange tortoise cows and the dragons horses similar to the one he now rode and called Boadicea. As he came up to the white building he saw Clint standing by the door with a preacher, a larger man compared to the thin but strong looking Clint, his face covered by thick spectacles and a thick beard. He lit Clint's cigar and looked up at Jonah. Clint motioned to the Preacher. "Sergio, go tell ma' one of the potential hire on's is here. I'll bring them in when the other one gets here." Sergio stood back, seemingly indignant on being an errand boy. "Raoul can do that, this is his business." Despite being brothers as Jonah had heard Sergio and Clint looked nothing alike, and unlike Clint's drawl, Sergio had a thick Italian accent. Perhaps miss Abigail's sons were not her own flesh and blood. Clint stared down his brother. "Raoul is rounding his posse up now and tell mama one of them mercenaries has arrived."

Sergio didn't complain this time and quickly shuffled off into the manor, huffing and puffing the whole time. Clint approached Jonah, pulling away at his cigar. "Well then Mr. Hex, looks like you got Mama's interest, ya see we got a bit of bother that my brother Raoul is s'posed to handle, but he and mama want two extra guns with that posse just to make sure things go smooth. She think yer good enough to be one of those extra hands, just needs to meet with ya."

Jonah lit up one of his own cigarillo's. "Then why am ah' standin' out here?" He asked through a cloud of smoke. Clint held up a calming hand. "We're just waiting on one more hand and she should be here soon." Jonah let out an annoyed grunt and took another puff of his cigarillo. "Better be worth it DeGray."

Brunnhilde wasn't entirely sure if she had been to this planet before or not. Admittedly, there were a number of jobs that the valkyrie had taken while she wasn't exactly sober. But they had called her by name and the job paid a lot, so the valkyrie was more than willing to show up to get that pay day. Jobs also had a habit of being really similar. Rescuing people, hunting people down, killing monsters, it all just... blended together. Brunnhilde was pointed in a direction, she punched a bunch of people until they stopped fighting, and then she dragged half of them back where they were supposed to be. Then she got paid and went off to get drunk.

She had been doing this for thousands of years and while Pandora had seemed a little different at first, the valkyrie was once again getting comfortable. Or lazy? She was sliding back into old habits because Pandora offered its own way of making her not care about others. Almost everyone that she might have considered a "friend" had vanished, minus one person, and she wasn't going to let herself dwell too much on the details. Most of them had been mortals. They would have died sooner or later anyways.

Her spaceship touched down just outside of town and Brunnhilde made sure to leave the security system on. No one was going to mess with her shit while she wasn't around. That was a lesson she had learned a long time back and not one she planned on ever repeating. The valkyrie slowly made her way to the building where she was supposed to report in.

There were three men standing there, though Brunnhilde quickly wrote them all off as mortals. It didn't matter what they looked like, how they spoke, or any other details. If they started trouble, then the Asgardian would end their little lives without a second thought. Her hazel eyes shifted through all three before shrugging slightly. "Waiting for someone named Brunnhilde?" One hand rested on her hip and the flat stare she gave suggested that she was all business. She just wanted that pay day, sooner instead of later.

Jonah looked up with his good eye at the woman approaching and blew out a puff of smoke. "Loo's like she's here DeGray, now can wuh go see yer mammy?" The bounty hunter shifted his weight and motioned for the door with his cigarillo. Clint seemed to ignore the impatient jab and smiled at the new arrival. "Miss Hilde', Mama was very happy you could answer our call. Now if you'll both follow me inside, please watch yer boots, mama had the floor cleaned and would prefer it stayed that way a little longer. Clint turned and sauntered inside, making a show of wiping his boots outside the door before stepping in. Jonah mumbled something to the new girl. "Maybe don' live in the middle'a the desert then." He walked after the Sheriff and he gave a couple low effort taps of the toes of his boot against the door frame to shake some dust free and stepped in.

It was about as showy as he expected, clean white walls, wooden floors of dark oak, paintings, vases full of wildflowers, fruit bowls, and maids and butlers sauntering around with cleaning supplies and other chores. Reminded him of back home, with one key detail missing. He looked up at a portrait and let out a whistle through his teeth. A pretty lady in a sky blue dress sat posing. "That yer sister Clint?" The sheriff looked back and just gave a shake of his head and a smirk. "That's Mama." Jonah looked back up at the painting. "Musta' been 'er younger years." He mumbled to himself.

Clint opened a set of doors to the back porch and waved for them to enter. Sergio stood by, watching the two behind his thick spectacles. "Hello Preacher-man." Jonah tipped his hat. The preacher said nothing and just turned and walked back into the gardens, casting a sideways glance at Brunnhilde. Jonah looked to his soon to be partner if they took the job and shrugged. Sitting on the porch was shockingly the same woman in the portrait, exactly the same, somehow with all those dark brown curls still falling down her shoulders, soft cheeks, and pretty brown doe eyes. “Mister Hex and Miss Hilde’ so lovely of y’all to come along. Please have a seat, have some lemonade. And please forgive Sergio being a man of God he is...uncomfortable with me doing such business with bounty hunters.” She sounded charming, a honey tongued southern lady, but Jonah had met plenty of those before.

Jonah took a seat and took one of the glasses of lemonade, pulling out a flask and giving it a little shake to determine there was a little bit of liquid left at the bottom of it. He uncorked it and poured the remaining contents into the glass of lemonade. ”Mr Hex we don’y drink before noo-“ Miss DeGray tried to interject but dropped it as Jonah took a sip to test the lemonade. “Damn ya use a whole cane in this here glass?” He called out to her, coughing a bit at the sudden sweetness, or maybe that was the shine hitting his throat.

Miss Abigail DeGray simply smiled. “It has been a while since we had a soldier boy around but its always lovely to make someone acquaintance before business. And it is lovely to see you again Brunnhilde.”

There were all sorts of different spoken languages in Pandora. Brunnhilde thought it was interesting how this dimension liked to translate things so they made sense. It was actually a plus to an otherwise stupid backwater place but suddenly, Brunn realized the reason the cowboy's words didn't make sense was the fact that... Pandora wasn't translating them. Almost like the valkyrie was already supposed to know what he was saying because he was speaking something she already understood. Except it didn't sound like any language that Brunnhilde spoke. One giant, jumbled mash of something that made her squint just a touch before nodding to the other man.

Business first. Business last. She might have needed a payday to get her through the next couple of weeks and make a couple of repairs on her ship. Idling and cruising, the ship was perfectly fine, but there was a touch of a whine when a chase was needed. Last thing she wanted as to be stranded in the middle of nowhere without a single bottle of booze on her ship. Certain priorities couldn't be ignored and the valkyrie moved forward, thumbs hitched in her belt as she took in the scene in front of her. Mama and her boys. More than a little bit creepy, but Brunnhilde side eyed Sergio even as her supposed partner in this job decided to empty a flask into his glass of lemonade. A single snort escaped her but otherwise nothing was betrayed on her features. Ah, she really needed a stiff drink.

Pleasantries weren't interesting in the least bit and Brunnhilde shifted in her seat slightly, hearing the wooden chair creak beneath her weight. "DeGray, details?" Hazel eyes slid across the faces in the room before finally picking up the glass of lemonade. She remembered how fussy this woman had been the last time around. Sharp about anyone not taking part in her southern hospitality. The glass felt so fragile in her hands but Brunnhilde lifted the glass to her lips and then tilted her head back, slamming back the glass of lemonade like it was a shot, not taking a breath before she had drained the entire glass.

She slammed it back down on the table, ignoring the sugary taste that she had felt through the entire damn thing, and crossing her arms. Brunnhilde hadn't broken eye contact while she had gulped down the sugar induced waste of liquid, but one eyebrow lifted. Business, business, business. What the fuck was she doing here?

If Mama DeGray was annoyed by Brunn's display she didn't show just smiling and nodding. Jonah chuckled and took another swig of his own lemonade. "Ah' like this one." Usually he had to work with grimy bastards but there was somethin' fun about this little missy. "Well we have had a spot of bother recently, a group of merchants, reptile folk of some sort who's name escapes me. Turns out they were not as civilized as we thought and and are demanding extra payment after services have been rendered to leave the planet, and are conducting it with threats of violence. One of my boys, Raoul, you did business with him before." She looked to Brunn at that mention but gave no details as to the prior business. "He is leading a posse to get rid of them." She said "get rid of" with a sunny disposition but one didn't hire gunhands to just make someone leave their property. She was hiring two killers over glasses of oversweetened lemonade. Felt just like back home now. "So what, ya want us to lend'a gun and..." He looked over at Brunn. "Uh sword. Ta' yer son ta' have a ride o' glory?" Hex kept his good eye on Miss DeGray as he took a long pull at the spiked lemonade.

"I just want my son to be safe Mr. Hex." That seemed to ruffle her a bit and she leaned forwards. "You will both be paid upon the safe return of my son and the death's of these...ruffians." That half second pause was one Jonah knew all too well. She had a much worse word for these lizard men, but she didn't want to smear her decorum with it. "And of course scuttle the ship, it could be dangerous to just leave it there." Jonah again assumed there was a different reason for that but a more pressing question was rolling around in his head.

"Ya told us 'bout the job, now the pay?"
He leaned back. "Now ah' think it goes without sayin' the standard bounty fee on this planet don't cover this." Miss DeGray regarded both of them for a moment. "I suppose not Mr. Hex, you an Miss Brunnhilde will be both paid four times the usual rate, each upon return." Jonah thought it over a second then nodded. "Ah'm good with that." He turned towards Brunn. "You?"

An Ewok strolls into a cantina and says to the bartender, “I’ll have a whisky and........soda.”. The bartender says, “Sure thing - but why the little pause?”
“Dunno,” says the Ewok. “I’ve had them all my life.”
A majority of the essays my students handed in have the distinct smell of ham. Do I want to know, or is this one of those "don't question it" moments? :\
