...Well, I guess the snakes are here.

Gerold kinda knew that it was probably only a matter of time before it happened...but then again, he hadn't exactly expected them to literally rear up their ugly heads in the middle of the Scorch, in broad daylight.

He also hadn't counted on himself being more or less alone when it happened, at least in the terms of human company. Daisy the yellow Chocobo didn't really count here, because not only was she more of the talkative birdlike variety, she also stood on the far side of the place he might have otherwise gone had he not suddenly found himself in danger.

In other words, there was now a King cobra literally uncoiling itself between him and certain freedom, its golden-brown hood shining just a little in the brightening light above.

And, sadly enough, he could only guess that this same cobra wasn't exactly in the mood to negotiate.

"Sorry to bother ya, buddy..." he began quietly, taking care not to make any sudden movements. "...But is it too late to get a 'get out of poisoning free' card?"

“Easy. Slow movements, soft tones,” Lucy Gray cautioned, her voice sounding from somewhere above. Should the man look for her, he’d see her peering down from atop a jutting rock. “They can’t hear well, but they can feel the vibrations in your words. It matters.”

She’d spoken before she fully took stock of the situation. It was an instinct to help, she supposed – she’d always had a way with snakes, and knew well that most people didn’t share her affinity. The man below her was in mortal danger, and she might be able to walk him through it.

But on the other hand…what if he was more dangerous than the snake? Lucy Gray had been on the run for a while now, ever since departing District 12. She’d known the danger in encountering other people. Some might be harmless, some might even be helpful to her…but some, they might just make her currently-miserable life even worse. If this stranger was that type, then maybe he ought to get bitten by that snake.

Time would tell. She watched the situation playing out below, sizing up both human and snake. Postures were tense on both sides. Could go either way. “You’ll want to step back, if you can. But slowly.”

There must have been a weird look stuck on his face, because whoever or whatever his new helper might have been, she sure as hell hadn't thought to be anywhere close by. Her voice came from several feet above him, but he didn't think he could look up too fast, else this swaying fanged thing decided to take a bite out of him for his stupidity.

"No arguments here, lady...!"

He couldn't exactly say that he blamed her, though, 'cause he most likely would have done the same if their 'situation' had been reversed. Hiding and helping at the same time, of course...which, he supposed, more or less meant that he would have to do as she had suggested to get out of this alive. That wouldn't be too bad, though. Not for a former soldier.

"Stay put, Daisy," he added in a low murmur, slowly raising his hands while the cobra stayed still, sticking its tongue out just to smell the air. He attempted a long, slow step backward, both eyes on the snake as he did so, and also not kicking up too much sand so he wouldn't mess everything up for them both by sneezing...

“You wanna be cool as a cucumber, Sunshine…or, just make it think that you are. It’s only an audience of one that you’ve got to impress here.” Her voice was as slow and soothing as she could make it. Anything to keep from worsening the tension. Things seemed to be going alright so far. He’d made no sudden movements. Most people would’ve run by now, and that just wasn’t the right move here.

Her gaze flitted over to the odd creature he’d called Daisy. She was sure she’d never seen anything like her before, or heard about anything like her, but now wasn’t the time to indulge her curiosity. The main thing was whether or not Daisy actually knew how to follow instructions. She hoped she did.

“That’s a pretty name,” she commented before looking back at the man. The snake hadn’t struck yet, but it was still poised, and it could almost certainly move faster than he could. “Keep moving back ‘til you’re out of range. You’re letting it know that you’re not a threat. Just…” She trailed off suddenly. The snake had edged forward, subtly. It hadn’t struck, it wasn’t even in full pursuit, but it still wasn’t the reaction she’d been hoping for.

" 'Sunshine'? That's the best you can come up with?"

It probably would have been a better idea to just take all of this in his stride, but Gerold couldn't exactly claim to be thinking straight right now. This miniature killer of the desert very nearly had him on the ropes, and even though he saw that he was halfway to the formations behind him, just about anything could go wrong before he got there.

Like...the snake deciding to jump forward about an inch, for example.

"Okay, okay...taking it back! No surprises...just let me go..."

However, just in case he had gone too fast before, he sure would make himself slow it down a bit more now. One small step at a time would have to be enough here. Any more, and his uninvited guest might start getting ideas about his intentions all over again.

"...No arguments here, kid. I'll be sure to tell you all about Daisy after I don't die."

Ah, but he would just have to keep everything calm until then...yeah. Just a little farther...right?

This wasn’t going as well as she’d hoped. Or as well as he’d hoped, she was sure. The snake, meanwhile, probably wasn’t thrilled about the situation either, but since it was the source of all the trouble, Lucy Gray could only feel so sorry for it.

In any case, it was time to try something new. “Hush now,” she instructed the man. She wasn’t sure that he would obey, but the distraction she had planned would work better if he did. With that said, she began to hum a soft, slow, familiar tune, the tune of a soothing lullaby she had often sung to Maude Ivory. It was so gentle, with no jarring notes, perfect for a send-off into sleep.

Not that the snake was likely to sleep, but as she hummed, Lucy Gray watched it for signs of relaxation. It did indeed seem to be losing some of the tension in its posture, and slowly but surely, she saw it begin to lose interest in the man. It turned its attention toward her, perched up on top of the rock. She wasn’t sure how well it could see her from down at ground level, but it certainly heard her and could feel the vibrations of her song. Apparently, it liked it. Good.

“And now’s your chance,” she sang, in the same tune of the song, her words directed to the man. If he decided to leave the situation entirely now, she wouldn’t be too surprised, and she was in a better position to escape the danger than he had been. Still, she hoped he wouldn’t.
